First organized in 1855, the 4th Cavalry of the United States Army served at the Schofield Barracks on Oahu from 1913 to 1919, where they were charged with protecting U.S. interests during World War I, when Germany had colonial outposts in New Guinea and Samoa. For short spans before and after the war, the 4th was scheduled along the U.S.-Mexican border.
